We’re excited to announce our new Company-in-Residence program, built to highlight and champion the spirit of collective/ensemble creation in and around LA. We are thrilled to welcome our first resident company: FREAK NATURE PUPPETS
They are a collective of self-taught puppeteers that came together in 2022 and have been nonstop in their delightful offerings ever since. You may have seen the premiere of their first full-length show, Nosferatu's Sweet 16, in our Spaghetti Festival last November. There is so much we love and admire about this group. We have seen the inspiration and perspiration that leads to their prolific creation of endlessly whimsical puppets, their dedication to honing their skills together as an ensemble, and the ease and generosity with which they bring other curious artists and builders into their fold. The passion and free-spiritedness inside their creative process shines through their work. We’re happy to host Freak Nature, and provide support, mentorship, and resources as they develop a brand new show.

Retrospecs - A Benefit for Green Envelope Grocery Aid (IN-Person & Livestreamed)
Back in the early days of television (the 1990s), writers hoping to break in would write episodes of existing shows; these "spec" scripts were never meant to be produced, only to serve as samples for the aspiring writer. Spec scripts have gone out of fashion, but, in addition to being a great way to learn the craft, they were a lot of fun! You got to see the stamp individual writers put on your favorite shows.
In Retrospecs, we dig those old scripts by established writers out of their drawers and expose them to the warm light of the Elysian stage. Starring actors you know and love from TV, film, comedy, and the stage. We’re excited to announce our new Company-in-Residence program, built to highlight and champion the spirit of collective/ensemble creation in and around LA. We are thrilled to welcome our first resident company: FREAK NATURE PUPPETS
They are a collective of self-taught puppeteers that came together in 2022 and have been nonstop in their delightful offerings ever since. You may have seen the premiere of their first full-length show, Nosferatu's Sweet 16, in our Spaghetti Festival last November. There is so much we love and admire about this group. We have seen the inspiration and perspiration that leads to their prolific creation of endlessly whimsical puppets, their dedication to honing their skills together as an ensemble, and the ease and generosity with which they bring other curious artists and builders into their fold. The passion and free-spiritedness inside their creative process shines through their work. We’re happy to host Freak Nature, and provide support, mentorship, and resources as they develop a brand new show.

The story follows Jay Weingarten, a hopeless romantic searching for love. Encouraged by his best friend Kevin (Jordan Adika), Jay ventures out into the world, hoping to find his significant other. As he navigates the ups and downs of dating, Jay encounters Jessica (Jill O'Connell), an art historian with whom he shares a deep connection over their mutual love of paintings. Back in the early days of television (the 1990s), writers hoping to break in would write episodes of existing shows; these "spec" scripts were never meant to be produced, only to serve as samples for the aspiring writer. Spec scripts have gone out of fashion, but, in addition to being a great way to learn the craft, they were a lot of fun! You got to see the stamp individual writers put on your favorite shows.
In Retrospecs, we dig those old scripts by established writers out of their drawers and expose them to the warm light of the Elysian stage. Silent Film: “Upstream”
A zany backstage comedy that takes place in a theatrical boarding house (we've got sword-throwers, Hamlet, nepo-babies!) this is one of director John Ford’s earliest films, long thought to be lost to history. When a nitrate print of Upstream was found along a trove of other silent films in the New Zealand Film Archive in 2014, it was considered to be one of the most important and exciting discoveries. It was restored and had its re-premiere in 2015 at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences with a new ensemble score by our very own Michael Mortilla. It was added to the National Film Archives in Washington, D.C., where Michael’s score was again performed live.
Upstream will be preceded by Double Whoopee featuring Laurel & Hardy in a silent era comedy with international implications!

Good Showbiz is a celebration of the spirit and vibrant history of Jewish showmanship. Eli Leonard hosts this immersive spectacle of theatrical tradition, embroidered with feats of physicality, musicality, comedy, and stagecraft, culminating in a rarely attempted dramatic monologue.
Good Showbiz now features live music from Gustavo Bulgach & The Good Showbiz Klezmer Band. Bulgach is a founding member of the house bands for the House of Blues and the Simon Wiesenthal Museum of Tolerance, and his band, Klezmer Juice, is featured in the movie Wedding Crashers. Bulgach is a pioneer in the new generation of Klezmer - Jewish Soul musicians and torchbearers of an ancient traditional craft that unites generations in spirit.
