Chekhov’s The Harmfulness of Tobacco gets rebooted for the algorithm age: one man, one VR headset, and a lecture that won’t stay on topic.

When theater director and mixed-reality artist Kevin (as a robot) Laibson set out in 2019 to create a fully AI-generated adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s The Harmfulness of Tobacco, everything went wrong. Soda Pop

Soda Pop is an alt-comedy tour de force from Chicago comedian Parker Callahan. Fresh off a successful run at the 2025 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Soda Pop combines standup and original music in a multimedia, stream-of-consciousness ride through the mind of a slightly deranged gay man. One moment he’s singing about thrift-store underwear and in the next he’s calling the cops on you and all your friends. Absolutely NO trauma is explored. It’s just dumb, delightful fun led by an idiot in a Speedo. As one Scottish reviewer put it, “If there is a queer performance spectrum, Soda Pop breaks it, sets it on fire, and inhales a bottle of poppers through the glittery smoke.”

CLASS SHOW: Playing Yourself

The Elysian’s mission is to support innovative artists devising original and unconventional live comedy. Over the past two months, led by our Artistic Director Jacquelyn Landgraf, students in Playing Yourself have kickstarted the creation of a new solo show from their “auto-mythology.” They’ve generated new material from prompts that unpacked personal memories, stories, opinions, quirks, obsessions, and big ideas, maybe even unsent email drafts–in order to turn them into performance-worthy gems.

Be among the first to see these works-in-process as they each showcase 20 minutes of their brand-new creations!
